The Beginning of some Ideas Concerning
A rational approach to spiritual Concepts
My interest is in discussing and developing philosophical ideas that avoid leading to statements that claim absolute truth or knowledge. The human being, I believe, is hardly equipped to have absolute knowledge about anything. Assume that all statements coming from human beings have the possibility of containing error. In the laboratory concepts are considered as theory until proven true. But then again a proven theory, usually after some time, can be found in error and require a modification. Known as the “Scientific Method” this method has proven to produce reliable and usable results that are the basis of most, if not all, modern technical developments.
.
But of course the search for an approximate but reasonable answer to questions say of a spiritual nature can not be solved by application of the scientific method. Some say that it is because spiritual matters are not of a material nature. I would say that the statement seems to be true since such matters can and are reported solely as an experience within the confines of the human body and reported as such. I am tempted to say a single human being but I know that there are those who will claim that the experience is often one involving a group. So now we are stepping into the mechanics regarding the religious experience which is not my intention. Not only that but it is true that a mass of people like a fire can be carried into a shared experience which can become a mob.
I am talking about things that are normally in the field of religion but I do not intend to use that word, perhaps because as a child I was trapped in the irrational faith and the force of the parental application of religion. The effort of breaking away from these insidious teachings has warped my whole life and caused me to reject, or try to reject all aspects of faith including the use of the word god from my vocabulary.
I am an old man now, but do not think for one moment that I am worrying about my afterlife and attempting to assure a life in heaven. I like to think of myself as a rational man and as such want to develop ideas, not yet beliefs, that satisfy certain demands, most of which arise from my own being and that answer those demands in a rational way.
Let us talk about Darwin. He was not a man without religion, his father being a member of the clergy, but he was a rational man and a thinking man who thought God must have used method in the creation of life on the earth. His theory, and it was a theory, a proper scientific one, was taken without understanding by most of the church. It appealed to atheists who were also mistaken in believing that his theory promoted their cause. Darwin was a Christian. He possessed a good rational mind that was not satisfied with the primitive explanation of creation in the biblical genesis.
